Although they are related, porcelain is more like a cousin than a twin.

There are some subtle differences between ceramic and porcelain tiles. This means that one could be more advantageous for your particular project. These are just a few things to keep in mind when choosing tiles from Minoli Tiles.

Depending on your use of space, ceramic tiles or porcelain may work better for you. Here are their differences and best uses.
A quick comparison

The main difference between ceramic and porcelain tiles is how much water it absorbs. Porcelain tiles are less able to absorb water than ceramic or other non-porcelain ones.

This is due to the porcelain tile material. Clay is denser and thus less porous. This can have an effect on the behavior of tiles and their best use.

Construction
How are ceramic tiles made

Ceramic tiles can be made of natural red, brown, or even white clay. First, the clay must be fired at high temperatures in order to reduce its water content. After that, the glaze and then the pattern can be applied. The product is done.
How are porcelain tiles made

Porcelain is made with very specific clay. Finely-ground sand, and feldspar are added to the mix. The porcelain tiles are fired at a higher heat than ceramic. This helps make them super durable.

Prices

Ceramic tiles are typically more cost-effective that porcelain.

A square white tile made of ceramic costs around PS24.00 per sq. m2, while porcelain costs about PS35.00/ sq. m2. If you don’t want your house to look like a bank robbery, this is something to keep in mind.
High Density and Longevity

Porcelain tiles are more porous than ceramic. These tiles are stronger and more resistant to water, making them durable and less porous. This makes them ideal for high footfall areas and heavy use.

Ceramic isn’t necessarily less good. Ceramic is more dense but also less brittle, so it’s much easier to work in. Do-it-yourselfers can simplify their lives by using ceramic.
PEI Ratings

The Porcelain Enamel Institute rating (“PEI rating”) is a quick, easy way to find out which tile is appropriate for your home. It depends on how often you have walked through the tile.

Tiles are graded based on their hardness.

PEI 0- No foot traffic, wall tiles
PEI 1- Very light traffic (e.g. bathroom)
PEI2 – Light traffic bathroom and bedroom
PEI 3- Light to moderate Traffic (suitable for most domestic flooring)
PEI 4- Moderate to high traffic (suitable in domestic floors and commercial applications)
PEI5 – Heavy traffic (suitable in all domestic, commercial and heavy footfall uses)

Most ceramic tile floors are graded between 3-4. Porcelain tiles generally have a rating between 3-4.
What tiles do I own? How to distinguish the differences

The easiest and most efficient way to identify whether you are using porcelain or ceramic tiles, is to look at the manufacturer’s website. It is so easy, right?

Porcelain tiles or ceramic for…
Shower

Porcelain tiles are almost water-proof, making them the ideal material for installing wet rooms.

Ceramic is great for use in bathrooms with standard dimensions, and there are many options available.
A tight budget

Ceramic tiles might be your best option if money is tight. Ceramic tiles will cost you less and offer more style options. Ceramic tiles come with a wide variety of designs and colors to suit any style. There’s something for everybody.
High foot traffic

Porcelain tiles can withstand scuffs, scratches, and scratches. Porcelain tiles can be used anywhere there is high foot traffic such as in the hallway, kitchen, and commercial spaces.

Ceramic tiles offer a more durable and long-lasting option than laminate or carpet.
DIY project

Ceramic tiles can be used by DIYers who are skilled in the art of tile installation. Installing tiles in an area that requires a lot more cutting is a challenge. Porcelain takes more skill and tools to cut than ceramic tiles.
Your patio or outdoor space

Porcelain’s high water resistance means that it is well-suited to withstand all the elements. Ceramic can crack in cold weather so you might need a replacement floor faster than you think. This is where porcelain can provide you with peace of mind.
