The staff at your bricks-and-mortar vape shop can’t install your new kit, or fill it for your order. This is one of the most absurd ‘laws’.
This is certainly true in the USA, where staff can be penalized if they give even the smallest ‘hands-on advice’. It could be both absurd and dangerous.
The other day, I was at my local shop and saw an elderly man mumbling over the purchase of a starter kit.
He was confused when he asked his young assistant if it could work for him. The assistant replied that he was not allowed to.
The guy replied, “I’ll leave it there then” and left the shop looking very annoyed.
A sale is made, but it’s more important that another person smokes to get another pack of cigarettes.
You can even test drive a car next to the salesman. Or, you could walk around a shoe shop and try out your new stilettos.
As I said, stupid.

Vape Shop Experience for First Timers
There are three vape shops within my area. Two of them are small independents, the third is a well-known franchise.

The next one is mid-range and has a small number of starter kits. The third is a household name in vaping.

My experience is that it’s the suits-wearing men who are trying to “screw you”.

What to tell the Vape Shop Assistant
It is important to tell them how many cigarettes you smoke.
This is crucial as it will ensure that you get the correct amount of nicotine in your eliquid.
Okay, you’ve done your research. Now it’s time to look at the device and decide if it looks and feels good.
Your First E-Liquid
Many people start with tobacco flavours. But, it is important to know how many cigarettes you are able to smoke each day.
This is crucial as it will allow the assistant to give you the right amount of nicotine.
For a heavy smoker, 20 mg should satisfy your cravings. It will also give you a throat hit which is something many new vapers are looking for.
This brings us to the important questions that you need to ask.
Can I Taste It?
The short answer is yes.
Okay, you are happy with the device and have taken a look at it in person.
The assistant cannot set it up, but they can advise you/sell you some eliquid.
Although taste is subjective, most shops offer samples or taster bars to help you decide before buying.

Strangely, in my two independent shops, you must ask to taste. Even then it is begrudging on their side to say the least. This frustrates me as a veteran vaper.

E-Liquids Nicotine Levels
Find out the right nicotine level for you.
You might need more if you smoke heavier.
You can get the nicotine you need when you start your smoke-free journey at 12mg to 16mg.
You can use tobacco flavors if you want – that’s how most of us got started.
Some can be brutal and some can even be as bad as smoking, but it is not as severe as cigarettes.
I would recommend that you get at least 3 to 4 10ml bottles. Mix them up and use different nicotine strengths.
Vaping has many wonderful flavours, from fruit and desserts to menthol, tobacco and other flavors.
Last Thoughts
You should be commended for even considering an e-cigarette to help you quit cancer.
You should read both sides of this debate. It is confusing and can cause confusion among the “experts”.
One thing is certain – vaping is 95% safer that smoking. This is according to the Royal College of Physicians.
You have the right to choose an alternative to smoking.
[I would like to suggest a healthier option there, but I don’t believe I’m allowed to lol]
You might find some high-street vape shops imposing, but you can go in earlier in day to avoid fogging.
Ask questions and treat your first vape kit as if it were anything else.

The vape shop staff is just like other assistants, they are there to help.
If they don’t, then move your business elsewhere. But don’t let one bad experience of nervousness stop your from making the best possible health decision for your life.
