Archicad is a hugely acclaimed user-friendly and effective BIM software application that comes with many powerful tools. However, establishing an archicad-compatible Workstation optimised with Archicad isn’t an easy task because of the many options offered, such as 3D or 2D modelling analysis, photorealistic rendering, and more which can put a strain on the hardware. This article outlines the various hardware needs Archicad requires to determine the ideal Workstation configuration for optimizing you BIM workflows.

CPU

It is the Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the main component in the success of all Workstation build. Selecting the correct CPU for your needs is crucial for maximum performance, and crucial to ensure compatibility with any other hardware you might require. There are two major elements to be considered when choosing the right processor to use for BIM use. One of the first decisions you must consider is the amount of threads and cores you’ll require. The second factor to consider concerns the frequency of or speed of the processor’s cores.

Archicad is mostly a 3D or 2D modelling software similar to other modeling applications, Archicad runs significantly better on processors that have high clock speeds. Processors with higher clock speeds typically have lower core counts which can have the added advantage of being more economical. If the primary purpose of Archicad is for modeling it, we suggest either an Intel Core or AMD Ryzen based Workstation. Be sure to choose one that has the fastest clock speeds to optimize performance.

If you intend to perform other tasks with the system, like rendering with CPUs, you’ll benefit from a greater capacity processor, like the ones we have on the AMD Ryzen Threadripper range of Workstations. For occasional rendering such as gaming, a top-of-the-line AMD Ryzen 9 solution may give you more cost-per-dollar while keeping high speed for modelling.

If you intend to use GPU rendering then the CPU will not needed to produce these images, and consequently, the additional threads and cores in AMD Ryzen Threadripper AMD Ryzen Threadripper will be not needed. However, you may want to consider a premium processor like AMD Ryzen Threadripper when you are planning to use more than one Graphics on your system. Check out the following article for more information about GPU rendering options.

Graphics Cards

Like all 3D 2D modeling applications for professionals We recommend using an enterprise NVIDIA graphics card instead of the consumer-focused NVIDIA GeForce replacement. NVIDIA Quadro graphic cards were designed and constructed especially for workflows designed specifically for professionals. They use drivers that have been rigorously tested to ensure stability and optimal performance. They also have features like ECC memory as well as enhanced computing capabilities that are extremely advantageous.

We suggest choosing an NVIDIA Quadro Graphics card that has two to four GB of RAM (Graphical Memory) for those who use it lightly or those just starting to begin learning Archicad. For more intense workloads, you could require 6+ Gb of VRAM.

If you are planning on GPU rendering using applications like Lumion and other such applications, then choosing the right graphics card with more CUDA cores can be an enormous benefit for you. For even greater performance, consider opting for several graphics cards in the best computer for ArchiCAD. GPU rendering is extremely efficient so the addition of a second card with the same model usually results in nearly 100% increase in performance. It is also cheaper than buying one top-of-the-line graphics card.

Memory

Archicad requires a huge amount of memory system (RAM) for optimal performance. It is, however, essential not to invest in excessive memory. Memory that is too large does not offer any performance advantages, but upgrading your processor or graphics card can provide significant improvement. It is vital to balance memory capacity but insufficient memory will negatively impact performance.

We typically recommend 16GB for mid-level to entry-level users and 32-64GB for those who are more demanding. It is also possible to boost your memory capacity in case you plan to run more than one program simultaneously. If you follow these guidelines, that you will need ample memory to ensure that your Workstation runs smoothly and efficiently without overspending your money.

If you already have an Archicad computer, then we suggest using Windows Task Manager while working on your current projects to improve your Memory requirements further. Contact us now if you require further assistance.

Storage

There are three main types of storage utilized in Workstations currently. Classic hard disk drives (HDD), SATA based Solid State Drives (SSD) and NVMe Solid State Drives (NVMe SSD). HDD’s are a great price-to-quality ratio and the biggest capacities for storage drives. However, they’re extremely slow when compared to SSD’s. SSDs with SATA are higher priced than HDD’s however they are more efficient than an traditional HDD. SSDs that use NVMe utilize PCIe technology instead of SATA for data transfer,, making them the most speedy and efficient alternative by a substantial amount. There is a cost that you pay to get this performance, however the performance boost has made them the most used drives of today.

We suggest a two-drive configuration, which includes either one of a SATA SSD as well as an NVMe SSD in accordance with your budget. The SSD is an operating system that is your main one, applications , and projects files. The traditional Hard Disk Drive should also be set up for cost-effective, long-term large storage. This configuration has been very well-liked by Workstation users due to its an excellent value-for-money and huge storage capacities, while providing exceptional performance.
