Tucked away beside the front entrance to Banana Block in East Belfast is a shiny steel food truck housing HiBurger.
Starting out in 2021 by posting a series of photos of different foods on Instagram, friends Anthony and Matt documented their often over-the-top creations and quickly gained traction.
Hosting numerous pop-ups around the city, focusing on items such as smash burgers, chicken wings, and chicken burgers, tickets would sell out almost instantly as people rushed to find out what the food was like.

Fast forward to now, and HiBurger is now fully established with their food truck in action every weekend. I had previously been lucky enough to get tickets to one of their pop-up events last year and was keen to get back to try their famous burgers.
Looking through the menu, I knew I had to keep it simple for my first trip, and opted for two signature smash burgers (one without pickles), a portion of hand-cut chips, and a portion of their special for that day which was hoisin chicken wings with toasted sesame, fresh chili, scallion, and ponzu mayo.
I placed my order and waited 20 minutes until the food was ready. Any issue I may have had with the wait to get my hands on the food went away as soon as I opened the brown bag and could smell the mix of food wafting up.
It’s very rare to find a burger that looks perfect, but HiBurger has done a pretty good job of it. Most of its aspects are homemade, including the bun and pickles, and it really makes a difference in terms of the flavours and textures.
The signature burger was crispy, gooey, and soft all at once – with the smash burgers creating a crispiness that was welcomed. As for the chips, they were crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and well seasoned; everything you want really.
We were absolutely stuffed by this stage but the show had to go on for a taste of the hoisin wings. The moment I saw these on Instagram I knew they had to be added into the order.
The wings were nice and crispy, while the sauce was well-balanced with a blend of sweet, salty, and sticky.
I’ve had a good few burgers and chips in my time, but it’s safe to say that HiBurger has to be up there with the best in Belfast. It’s been a good while since I’ve had a burger so satisfying to eat, with the flavours of each ingredient coming through.
All in all, I’m looking forward to getting back to HiBurger, maybe to change things up and try one of their chicken burgers. You may be pushed for time if you’re stopping by on a Friday lunchtime break from work, but it’s a great spot to check out at the weekend.
